What Is MMA? A Beginner’s Complete Guide

The Short Answer

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a full-contact combat sport that allows fighters to use striking, wrestling, and ground fighting from multiple martial arts disciplines within a single contest. It is the closest thing to a complete, unrestricted fighting system in modern sport.

An MMA fight can begin with a kickboxing exchange, transition to a wrestling takedown, and end with a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu submission on the ground — all within one round. No other combat sport demands this breadth of skill.

MMA is the fastest-growing combat sport in the world, with the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) as its premier global promotion, broadcasting to over 900 million households across 170+ countries. In India, MMA is experiencing explosive growth through promotions like Matrix Fight Night (MFN) and the MMA Federation of India (MMAFI).

At Om’s Martial Arts & Fitness Studio, our MMA program integrates striking (Kickboxing/Muay Thai), wrestling (takedowns and control), and ground game (BJJ/submissions) into a unified curriculum. We train beginners with zero martial arts background through to competitive amateur fighters.

What Does an MMA Fighter Actually Do?

An MMA fighter must be competent in three distinct phases of combat:

Phase 1: Striking (Standing Range)

CategoryTechniques
PunchesJab, cross, hook, uppercut, overhand, superman punch
KicksLow kick, middle kick, high kick, front kick (teep), calf kick, spinning back kick
KneesStraight knee, diagonal knee, flying knee, clinch knee
ElbowsHorizontal, uppercut, downward (12-to-6), spinning elbow
Clinch strikesDirty boxing hooks, uppercuts from collar tie

Primary disciplines: Boxing, Kickboxing, Muay Thai

Phase 2: Wrestling & Takedowns (Transition Range)

CategoryTechniques
TakedownsDouble-leg, single-leg, high crotch, ankle pick, body lock, trip, throw
Takedown defenseSprawl, whizzer, underhook defense, frame and circle
Clinch controlUnderhooks, overhooks, body lock, collar tie, pummeling
Cage wrestlingWall walk, cage press, cage-assisted takedown

Primary discipline: Wrestling (freestyle, folkstyle, Greco-Roman)

Phase 3: Ground Game (On the Mat)

CategoryTechniques
PositionsMount, back control, side control, half guard, full guard
SubmissionsRear-naked choke, guillotine, arm triangle, armbar, kimura, heel hook
Ground-and-poundStriking from top position (mount, half guard)
EscapesHip escape (shrimp), guard retention, technical stand-up

Primary discipline: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), with elements of Judo, Sambo, and catch wrestling

The Integration Principle

MMA is not Boxing + Wrestling + BJJ. MMA is the art of connecting them.

The most important skill in MMA is transitioning between phases:

  • Punch → level change → double-leg takedown
  • Takedown → pass guard → mount → ground-and-pound
  • Sprawl → underhook → knee → clinch → throw
  • Guard pull → sweep → back take → rear-naked choke

At Om’s, every MMA session emphasizes transitions, not isolated techniques.

A Brief History (For Beginners)

Ancient Roots

  • 648 BC: Pankration introduced at the ancient Greek Olympics — a no-holds-barred combination of boxing and wrestling. The original MMA.

The Modern Birth

  • 1993: UFC 1 held in Denver, Colorado. An 8-man tournament with virtually no rules. Royce Gracie (BJJ) wins by submitting larger opponents, proving grappling’s effectiveness.

The Regulation Era

  • 2000-2001: The Unified Rules of MMA are established. Weight classes, rounds, judges, and foul lists are standardized. Zuffa LLC purchases the UFC.

The Global Explosion

  • 2005: The Ultimate Fighter reality show saves the UFC from bankruptcy. MMA goes mainstream.
  • 2016: UFC sold for $4 billion.
  • 2020s: MMA is a global phenomenon. Indian fighters like Anshul Jubli earn UFC contracts. The sport grows in every country.

5 Key Benefits of MMA

1. The Most Complete Workout

A 90-minute MMA session burns 700-1,000+ calories and engages every muscle group and energy system. Striking (shoulders, back, core, legs), wrestling (hips, legs, back, grip), BJJ (core, hips, grip, isometric strength). No other activity matches this breadth.

2. Practical Self-Defence

MMA covers all ranges of combat: standing strikes, clinch, takedowns, and ground fighting. If a confrontation goes to the ground (and many do), an MMA-trained person has answers. A pure striker does not.

3. Mental Toughness

MMA is “physical chess.” You must think, adapt, and execute under physical duress. Sparring teaches you to stay calm when someone is trying to hit you or choke you. This composure transfers to every high-pressure situation in life.

4. Humility and Ego Management

You will be submitted, out-struck, and out-wrestled regularly. This builds ego resilience. MMA teaches you that you are always a student. There is always someone better. The only person you compete with is who you were yesterday.

5. Community

MMA gyms are uniquely bonded. You train with partners who help you improve, who hold pads for you, who tap you out and then show you the escape. The shared suffering of a hard training session creates friendships that last.

Common Beginner Questions

Q: Do I need experience in another martial art?
A: No. Our beginner program teaches striking, wrestling, and BJJ fundamentals simultaneously. Many of our best students started with zero martial arts background.

Q: Is MMA safe for beginners?
A: Yes, in a structured, supervised environment. At Om’s, beginners do not spar for the first 6-8 weeks. All sparring is controlled, with protective gear, under direct coach supervision.

Q: How is MMA different from kickboxing?
A: Kickboxing is striking-only (punches, kicks, knees). MMA adds wrestling, takedowns, ground fighting, and submissions. An MMA fight can end by knockout, submission, or decision. A kickboxing fight can only end by knockout or decision.

Q: How often should I train?
A: For fitness: 2-3× per week. For skill development: 4-5× per week. For competition: 5-6× per week.

Q: Will I get hit in the face?
A: In beginner classes, no. In intermediate and advanced sparring, controlled contact occurs with head guards, mouthguards, and appropriate gloves. The coach monitors intensity.

Q: Can I start MMA at 30? 35? 40?
A: Yes. We have students who started at 30, 40, and beyond. The training is adapted to your physical capacity. The art is the same.

Q: Is MMA useful for self-defence?
A: MMA is arguably the most practical martial art for self-defence because it covers all ranges. However, real-world self-defence also requires situational awareness, de-escalation, and legal knowledge, which we cover in our Self-Defence program.
